The Vans Authentic was the very first shoe made by Paul Van Doren when he opened the Van Doren Rubber Company in 1966. Originally named ‘Style #44,’ this shoe was inspired by similar panel sneakers in the market. Over 50 years later, that shoe remains one of the most iconic footwear silhouettes of all time, and Vans is celebrating the icon with a special exhibit to showcase the design evolution through Vans’ history.

First released in navy blue, white, loden green and red, the Authentic is a simple low top lace-up featuring a durable canvas upper, metal eyelets, Vans flag label and waffle outsole. Vans’ focus was to build quality products using the best rubber compounds available, which caught the eye of the local skateboarders in the 1970’s. Thanks to the thick dual layered canvas, 4-stitch backstay and the sticky rubber waffle sole, Vans lasted longer and improved board-feel and grip tremendously. Vans were adopted by the infamous Dogtown Zephyr team and the Authentic was quickly popularized as the world’s first skateboarding shoe. Today, it remains a global icon of creative individuals and youth culture worldwide.

With the Authentics history spanning the last 51 years, the shoe has been featured on the feet of countless legends across action sports, art, music and street culture. Throughout the last five decades, the Authentic has been updated to features upgraded technologies like Vans’ Ultracush HD footbed; so skateboarders of today can continue to push the limits of the sport just like the legends did back in the day.
